Later on tonight's show, we'll see highlights of the recent International Folk Dance held at Cookeville High School.
And we'll have a preview of this week's Senior Olympics.
But first tonight, this story.
Recently Gainesboro, Tennessee was the site of the Eighth Annual Poke Sallet Festival, sponsored by the Gainesboro JCs.
The festival is a three-day celebration of crafts, competitions and music.
All in honor of that traditional gourmet treat, poke sallet.
We visited the festival on Saturday.
A day of racing, crafts and good music.
(energetic upbeat music) (lively cheerful music) ♪ I met my darlin' in the springtime ♪ ♪ When all the flowers were in bloom ♪ ♪ And like the flowers our love blossomed ♪ ♪ We married in the month of June ♪ ♪ Our love was like a burning ember ♪ ♪ It warmed us as a golden glow ♪ ♪ We had sunshine in December ♪ ♪ And threw our roses in the snow ♪ ♪ Now God has taken my darlin' ♪ ♪ And left me with a memory ♪ ♪ A memory I will always cherish ♪ ♪ Are these last words he said to me ♪ ♪ Our love was like a burning ember ♪ ♪ It warmed us as a golden glow ♪ ♪ We had sunshine in December ♪ ♪ And threw our roses in the snow ♪ ♪ My darlin's buried on the hillside ♪ ♪ Where all the wild spring flowers grow ♪ ♪ And when winter snows start fallin' ♪ ♪ On his grave I'll place a rose ♪ ♪ Our love was like a burning ember ♪ ♪ It warmed us as cold winds blow ♪ ♪ We had sunshine in December ♪ ♪ And threw our roses in the snow ♪ ♪ And threw our roses in the snow ♪ (audience applauds) (cheerful banjo music) ♪ Cajun said before he died ♪ ♪ That tomorrow that all be right ♪ ♪ (indistinct) what could that be ♪ ♪ It's all old vision (indistinct) ♪ ♪ Well, you look at the water, and the water alone ♪ ♪ Look at the water and time will slow ♪ ♪ Look at the farm, I know the chickens are here ♪ ♪ (indistinct) and that all we live ♪ ♪ Cajun top and ran all hill ♪ ♪ Blues and whistle are mild in thrill ♪ ♪ Blues with (indistinct) ringing a bill ♪ ♪ (indistinct) hill ♪ (audience cheers) (bright lively music) (audience cheers) (cheerful energetic music) (audience applauds) (rapid playful music) (audience cheers) - [Announcer] May is older Americans' month, and in celebration of that event the Upper Cumberland Area Agency on Aging will sponsor the Third Annual Senior Olympics on Friday, May 24th at Sherlock park on the Tennessee Tech campus.
One of the Olympic events is bowling, and recently at Bowling World in Cookeville, we visited Louis and Catherine Haney, and they told us what they liked about bowling in the Senior Olympics.
- I don't know, I finally fellowship closer than anything else I've ever been in.
You think of anything better?
- No, I mean, they're a great group of people.
They all get along well, and everybody roots for everybody else.
And you're just happy when the guy you're competing against makes a strike as you are when you make a strike yourself.
- Almost (chuckling).
- Well, I'd say almost.
Of course, there is competence.
But you're not unhappy if your competition beats you, it's just a of those that you're happy to see everybody bowl well.
- [Announcer] Other activities in the Senior Olympics on Friday will be golf putting, swimming, tennis, one mile walk and run, shuffleboard, horseshoes, and a basketball and softball thron.
There will also be other games and activities for the 500 seniors expected from the 14 County Upper Cumberland area.
That's the Senior Olympics, Friday, May 24th at Sherlock Park on the Tech Campus.
Earlier this month, Cookeville High School was the scene of an evening of International Folk Dancing sponsored by the Cookeville JCs.
The audience was entertained by the hearts and folk dancers from Cookeville.
West German dancers stood Gardner's field crease, the Yugoslavian folklore ensemble Zuora and the Rutherford County square dancers and Cripple Creek Cloggers.
